Helfer is a native of rural Donalda, Alberta, Canada and was the daughter of Dennis and Elaine Helfer. Her parents are from German, English, Swedish and Norwegian origin. She went to William E. Hay Composite High School situated in Stettler. With her sisters Trena Tammy Tara She resided in the family grain farm.
